Why doesn’t the Mystical Rose Oratory community have kneelers as required by the General Instruction of the Roman Missal?

Exemption-Letter_KneelersThe General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) outlines that the faithful “should kneel beginning after the singing or recitation of the Sanctus (Holy, Holy, Holy) until after the Amen of the Eucharistic Prayer”. However, because of the design of the Oratory where the area for the congregation is sloped with a small step between each row of chairs, it would have been cumbersome to install kneelers.

Bishop Larry Silva granted Mystical Rose Oratory an exemption from the requirement that kneelers be installed. (Read a copy of the letter)

As a result, we remain standing during the consecration. However, it is important to note that our custom here at Mystical Rose is the exception and not the norm. Therefore, we “ought to make a profound bow when the priest genuflects after the consecration.” (GIRM #43)
